Queen mary 2 review

Review of queen mary 2

Launched in 2004, RMS queen mary 2 cruise ship is the oldest and most famous of all cunard liners, with fleet mates MS queen victoria (2007) and MS queen elizabeth (2010). Cunard's newest liner will enter service in 2022.

History - construction and ownership

Cunard line is a british-american cruise line brand, operated by carnival UK and owned by carnival corporation (shipowner). Cunard is headquartered in southampton (england UK) and is among world's oldest passenger shipping companies. In 2015, cunard line celebrated its 175th anniversary.

Cunard held the blue riband for the fastest atlantic voyage for most of the next 30 years. In 1968 cunard line withdrew from year-round service to concentrate on cruising and summer transatlantic sailings for vacationers. The queens were replaced by QE2 (queen elizabeth 2), which was designed for her special dual role. In 1998, carnival corporation acquired cunard. Five years later, queen elizabeth 2 was replaced on her transatlantic runs by QM2 (queen mary 2). Currently, cunard is the only shipping company operating a scheduled passenger service between north america and europe.

The 148,528-ton, 1,300-passenger cruise ship RMS queen mary 2 is the flagship of cunard line and one of the most modern cruise vessels designed nowadays - the biggest ocean liner in the world, built specifically to cross the atlantic ocean. QM2 was created with perfection, from bow to stern, with 14 spacious decks on which to relax and unwind. Gorgeous public areas, lavish dining rooms, ballrooms, theatres, lounges, and you may not believe it but there is even a planetarium onboard. Queen mary 2 boasts a lot of deck space. In order passengers to be well protected when the cruise ship is moving fast (30 knots), invisible windscreens were built.

Stephen payne was queen mary 2 naval architect - a carnival’s designer, who resembled features of some former ocean liners. These aspects include three thick black lines which recall the appearance of the first queen mary. Because queen mary 2 is too large and cannot dock in all ports, the passengers are ferried in tenders to and from the ship. For transporting passengers to shore, tenders pull up to loading stations, which have large hull doors for hydraulically opening outwards and forming a boarding platform.

The vessel changed its flag in 2011 from london UK to hamilton bermuda in order to be able to offer onboard weddings. RMS stands for "royal mail ship" - a gesture to cunard line's history.

Cunard queen mary 2 cruise ship QM2 was most famous before her first sailing, and today is a worthy heir to cunard’s legacy. She is the flagship of the most respected fleet in the world, consisting of luxury ocean liners. With her accommodation, renowned restaurants, breathtaking grand lobby, you will be amazed for sure.

RMS queen mary 2 is the only ocean liner still sailing transatlantic cruise crossing schedules each year between southampton and new york. She is also a magnificent and super luxury ocean liner- the only one ever built. Queen mary 2 provides modern cruise travel experiences with its fourteen spacious decks designed to comfortably relax; lounges; dining rooms; ballrooms and theaters- not to forget the spectacular and only planetarium at sea. You must sail with this queen of the sea to really enjoy every single minute.

Cruise itinerary program

Queen mary 2 itinerary program is based on regular transatlantic crossings with departures from southampton UK, hamburg, and new york. Each year the ship offers a “world cruise” sailing roundtrip from southampton and oneway itinerary segments. QM2 features special cunard cruises to canada (new england) and the caribbean, also with departures from UK and USA.

Cabins

Most queen mary 2 staterooms are 250-270-sq. Foot balcony rooms. There are a total of 1363 staterooms (of which 175 suites, 784 balcony, 293 inside rooms) in 23 categories. The largest aboard queen mary 2 are the grand duplex suites (2250 ft2). The so-called ‘staterooms’, the cheapest QM2 cabins, include a private bathroom with shower, toilet, sink, comfortable beds, TV, dressing and coffee tables, chair, internet access pay-per-minute, room service menu, electronic safe for valuables. The staterooms on cunard queen mary 2 can be separated into categories, in cost ascending order: standard inside (no window, but beautifully designed with all facilities above); standard atrium view (standard inside cabins with a small window, allocated to britannia restaurant); standard oceanview (with a small non-opening porthole with a sea view); britannia premium balcony (the cheapest type with own balcony, allocated to britannia restaurant); britannia deluxe balcony (with a glass-fronted balcony, allocated to britannia restaurant); britannia club balcony (similar to britannia deluxe balcony, allocated to ‘britannia club’ single-sitting restaurant); princess balcony suites (suites with balcony, allocated to princess grill); queens balcony suites (various types including the grand duplex suites, allocated to queen’s grill restaurant).

Shipboard dining options - food and drinks

All cunard ships have 3 main restaurants offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner: queens grill restaurant is designated for guests staying in queens grill accommodations. Evening dining is anytime between 6.30 pm - 9.00 pm. Princess grill restaurant - for guests staying in princess grill accommodations. Evening dining is anytime between 6.30pm - 9.00pm. Britannia restaurant – for guests staying in britannia balcony, oceanview or inside staterooms. Dining arrangements depend on the class of accommodation passengers have chosen. Most of them prefer the britannia class and dine in the main restaurant. Passengers can upgrade to a ‘junior suite’ and then dine in princess grill, or choose a suite and then dine in the queens’ grill. Thus they are grouped by cunard as the so-called grill passengers who are permitted to the queens’ grill lounge and may also use the private area on deck 11 and its whirlpool. The other public areas are allowed to use by all passengers.

Each stateroom is allocated and most cabins are allocated to britannia restaurant - two-story with 1,300 seats. Princess grill on deck 7 is for the more expensive staterooms- the queen’s grill on the same deck - for the very best ones. Fares include all meals in the allocated restaurant and the afternoon tea served in king’s court or queen’s room. Food is excellent - you may choose different starters, main courses, desserts, being changed every day. Dining optional venues - instead of in allocated restaurants, you can choose to eat in the self-service informal king’s court on deck 7 (with several buffet areas) or in the golden lion pub on deck 2. You may have breakfast or lunch at the king’s court area which is open twenty-four hours a day - it serves as a buffet restaurant. Todd english restaurant on deck 8 serves superb food, call in the morning to reserve a table.

Each cabin has free room service with a simple menu - burgers, pasta, crackers which can be ordered by phone at any time. If you order drinks, they are charged at bar prices.

When you book you may request a sitting. The britannia restaurant has two for dinner - at 6 p.M. And at 8.30 p.M. Princess grill and queens grill do not have sittings - when they are open, you can dine any time you choose. A note for confirmation sitting and table number will be left in your stateroom when you board. Lunch and breakfast do not require allocated tables or sittings.

NOTE: during the ship's major drydock refit in 2016, "winter garden" was replaced with "carinthia lounge". The new lounge offers alternative breakfast, lunchtime options, and premium coffees. Also during the 2016 refurbishment, "todd english" (mediterranean cuisine) was replaced with "the verandah" - contemporary french cuisine restaurant. The buffet-style "kings court" was completely transformed, with the addition of a smokehouse (alternative dining concept).

Passengers staying in suites are offered new menus in refurbished settings by princess grill and queens grill restaurants. Britannia restaurant, golden lion pub, and veuve clicquot champagne bar all boast refreshed menus. Cunard line has created many of the new menus in its development kitchen in southampton.

Which one applies each night is noted in pre-voyage documentation and daily program in all staterooms.

As it is with most modern passenger ships, the major public rooms are situated on the lowest decks on board queen mary 2 - the passenger cabins are stacked above them. This way the designers made it possible more passenger cabins to be equipped with private balconies which not to be affected by ocean waves. The illuminations theatre, the first at sea planetarium and a cinema are situated on deck 2, where are also the empire casino, the royal court theatre, the grand lobby, the golden lion pub and the first level of the britannia restaurant. The upper level of the illuminations theatre, the britannia restaurant, and the royal court theatre are on deck 3 together with a shopping arcade, the queen’s room, veuve cliquot champagne bar, sir samuel’s wine bar, the chart room and the G32 nightclub. Public room on deck 8 is the todd english restaurant. An eight thousand-volume library, a book shop, and a large outdoor pool are also situated there. A large amount of commissioned works of art – more than five thousand by an artist from sixteen different countries are visible in the ship’s corridors, public rooms, corridors, lobbies.

Each evening a daily program for the next day will be delivered to your stateroom, showing detailed information about activities on board, opening and closing times of bars, restaurants, and other facilities. Change is coming: A look at cunard’s plans for queen mary 2

Queen mary 2 refit: new staterooms, public rooms & dining venues for cunard’s iconic flagship

This spring, cunard line’s flagship, the grand queen mary 2, will undergo her most significant refit since entering service as the only modern-day ocean liner in the world back in 2004. When she emerges in mid-june, she’ll sport a brand-new look, new features, and new accommodation choices.

Shipboard refits are sometimes a touchy subject, but everything that cunard has announced for this special ship seems to fit right in with her essence. Indeed, the refits seem to correct under-utilized spaces and breathe new life into existing ones.

Taking place between may 27 and june 21, 2016 at the blohm + voss shipyards in hamburg, germany, the refit promises to be the most exciting change in QM2’s 12-year history.

Here’s a look at what we can look forward to from this modern-day greyhound of the sea:

New solo staterooms

Last year, cunard announced a range of enhancements that were made to accommodate the changing needs of its core passenger base aboard queen mary 2, and one of the first announcements related to solo travellers.

The upcoming refit will include the addition of 15 staterooms designed specifically for solo travellers, which will become the first solo accommodations added to the queen mary 2. The line noted that these solo rooms were designed to better serve the increased number of guests choosing to sail alone, as well as to those travelling as part of a multi-generational family.

Queen Mary 2, queen mary 2 casino.
Refitting a queen: the first solo traveller staterooms will be added to queen mary 2 this spring. Shown in the illustration, these staterooms will occupy the former images photo gallery on deck 3L port side.

Known as category KB and KC, these solo oceanview staterooms will occupy some interesting areas of the ship. Nine category KB staterooms will be installed on deck 2, in the area currently occupied by the empire casino’s slot machines. These will be relocated to the forward part of the empire casino, adjacent to the grand lobby. We can see why cunard chose that area: the casino, even in the evenings, is far too big on this ship for the relatively small number of guests that use it.

Queen Mary 2, queen mary 2 casino.
Additional category KB solo staterooms will take up space currently occupied by the empire casino on deck 2.

Solos can also select one of six category KC oceanview staterooms on deck 3L, the so-called “tween deck” that functions as a pass-through to access the queen’s room without having to go through the britannia dining room.

Currently, this space is home to images photo gallery, which will be relocated across the hall from the golden lion pub on deck 2. From the deck plans, it appears as though the corridor will still provide access to the queen’s room aft, and the G32 nightclub that exists beyond the queen’s room.

More britannia club balcony staterooms – and A new look

Cunard is also increasing the number of britannia club balcony staterooms aboard queen mary 2 with the installation of 30 new category A2 staterooms on deck 13, marking the first time accommodations have been featured on deck 13 of this ship.

They will take the place of the current (and rarely-used) splash pool and regatta bar. Ranging from 242 square feet to 248 square feet, these rooms let guests dine in the more intimate britannia club restaurant, which is situated adjacent to the main britannia dining room. Guests have assigned tables, but may come as they wish between 6:30 p.M. And 9:30 p.M.

Queen Mary 2, queen mary 2 casino.
New britannia club balcony staterooms are coming to deck 13, shown at left, while some changes are afoot for deck 12, right.

The line will also be refreshing the décor of current and new britannia club balcony staterooms. Colors include a nautical palate of blues that is designed to soothe and entice travellers to linger in their midrange accommodations.

More kennels

Humans aren’t the only beneficiaries of this extended drydock: A total of 10 new kennels will be added to queen mary 2’s uppermost deck, expanding the total number of kennels aboard the ship to 22 from 12. Both dogs and cats can sail on transatlantic crossings, and the existing 12 kennels sell out well in advance, according to cunard.

The kennel refurbishment will include a new inside play area, a larger outdoor walking area for the pets, and an enhanced owner’s lounge. Cunard will also install a lamp post and a fire hydrant inside the dog walking area; features that were included originally aboard queen elizabeth 2 and originate from suggestions made by the duke of windsor.

Goodbye, winter garden; hello carinthia lounge

Located forward on deck 7 just aft of the canyon ranch spa, the winter garden was perhaps one of the most baffling public rooms aboard queen mary 2. It was one of our favorites, but we appear to be alone in that regard, as the room remained largely empty and under-used, save for the occasional spa lecture.

Cunard seem to have realized this, having announced plans to dramatically transform the lounge for the better. The new carinthia lounge will feature a dedicated patisserie and an afternoon tea service, with the option of a special veuve cliquot champagne afternoon tea experience (this used to be held in the veuve cliquot champagne bar on deck 3). When the sun sets, the atmosphere will evolve into an inviting evening spot with premium wine, small plates and relaxed entertainment.

Queen Mary 2, queen mary 2 casino.

“the carinthia embodied the spirit of travel in the 1920s, which saw the rise in popularity in world voyages and winter cruises, and it is our honor to bestow this name onto our new lounge set to launch following refit,” says richard meadows, president, cunard, north america. “we believe this space will truly elevate the queen mary 2 experience, adding new innovative culinary options, as well as another level of refined relaxation and entertainment for our guests.”

Revitalized culinary options: A better king’s court, and A farewell to todd english

If there was one space that seemed to have always been problematic aboard queen mary 2, it was the king’s court buffet on deck 7. Queen mary 2’s casual eatery suffered from a lack of window seats and a disjointed layout that made it difficult to navigate, even after repeated crossings.

But no more: cunard is re-doing the entire area with new décor and what it promises will be an “interactive experience,” featuring rethought food stations and galley options.

In fact, cunard spent 18 months carefully redesigning the king’s court from the ground-up, and the results look beautiful. While the general arrangement plan stays largely the same, there will be a host of new features like pre-set tables and waiter-served drinks.

Queen Mary 2, queen mary 2 casino.
Todd english will be rebranded as the veranda following queen mary 2’s refit, and will be given a new decor and menus. Photo © 2015 aaron saunders

Cunard chefs will take center stage in the reimagined kings court as they guide guests through cooking demonstrations highlighting the remastered menus and the fresh, high quality ingredients used onboard.

Various food journeys will be rotated throughout the dining experience, from enticing hot and cold buffet options to light snacks, afternoon treats and alternative evening dining cuisines such as indian, italian, pan asian and tex mex.

The popular chef’s galley area, serving italian pastas and pizzas for lunch, will also offer a chef’s table tasting menu on select evenings. Hosted by the executive chef, the chef’s table will offer guests the opportunity to hear insights and recipe tips while enjoying a tasting menu expertly paired with fine wines.

Also changing is todd english, cunard’s specialty restaurant located on deck 8 aft. Rebranded as the veranda, a favorite among guests onboard cunard’s queen elizabeth and queen victoria, this remastered dining venue will evoke the special personality and flavor of french regional cooking with seasonal influences, while still maintaining the unique viewpoint overlooking the ship’s stern decks.

Other public rooms will be revitalized, but queen mary 2’s sense of grandeur won’t change. Photo © 2015 aaron saunders

The refit will also spruce up existing passenger areas, and will include regularly-scheduled technical maintenance like the repainting of the hull and the inspection and cleaning of the ship’s four rolls-royce “mermaid” propulsion units. Queen mary 2’s last large-scale refurbishment occurred in 2012.

For us, this is one refit that just makes sense. We can’t wait to see the revitalized queen mary 2.
